If you are heading to Pembrokeshire this summer then look out for the new Coastal 'bike' Bus Service, which runs out of Pembroke.

The 'Coastal Cruiser' bus service is the first bus in the country to welcome both bicycles, surfboards and wheelchairs! This innovative service will also run on bio-diesel - an environmentally friendly fuel.

The 'Coastal Cruiser' is being introduced to provide public transport access to the coastline and builds on the success of the 'Puffin Shuttle', 'Celtic Coaster', 'Poppit Rocket' and 'Strumble Shuttle' coastal bus services.

The 'Coastal Cruiser' will provide a valuable solution to rural transport problems in this area, providing daily public transport to enable locals and visitors to go walking, surfing, cycling, climbing or spend a day at the beach.

The bus route follows the coastline from Pembroke to Angle, Freshwater West, Castlemartin, Bosherston, Stackpole and Freshwater East. The bus also serves Broad Haven (South) and Stackpole Quay Car Parks daily and Stack Rocks Car Park at Weekends and Bank Holidays.

Silcox Coaches will be operating the bus service and it is hoped that the initiative will reduce the number of vehicles on the roads in the area and also enable non-car users to access this remote and beautiful part of Pembrokeshire.

Kirsty Morris, Greenways Officer, said "This is the first bus in Pembrokeshire to carry bicycles, free of charge, having the capacity to carry 2x bikes inside the bus at any one time. If this pilot scheme is successful then we hopefully repeat the scheme with other buses in the county. The lane cycling in this area is wonderful, but the bus will be a good back-up just in case those legs get tired!"

This service currently runs 3-days a week in the winter on: Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays and will start running 7-days a week from Saturday 29th April to Sunday 1st October 2006.

This bus has been introduced by Pembrokeshire County Council, with contributions from Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority, as part of the Pembrokeshire Greenways project - helping you access the coast and walk the Pembrokeshire Coast National Trail without having to use a car.
